Austin Dillon Continues the Legacy
Returning for another season, one of the most watched cars will be that of Austin Dillon in the #3 car. That number became famous, thanks to one of the most dynamic drivers of all time, Dale Earnhardt. Called the Intimidator because of his sometimes questionable racing style, Earnhardt had the #3 car from 1984 -2001. At the 2001 Daytona 500, Earnhardt lost control of his car and slammed in to a wall, killing him instantly. His death was a huge blow to NASCAR fans.
The number 3 went unused until Austin Dillon, the grandson of the race team owner, resurrected the number in the 2014 season. There were mixed emotions about that move, but the number belongs to the team, not the driver. However, the Earnhardt family embraced the return of the #3 car to the NASCAR Cup Series. Dale Earnhardt Jr. stated that he was glad that the number was resurrected, and that it was the right thing to do.
Strangely, it could be argued that Dale Earnhardt saved Austin Dillon’s life. Sweeping safety changes after Earnhardt’s death allowed Dillon walk away from a brutal crash in the final lap of the Coke Zero 400. The crash occurred at the Daytona Motor Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. Clearly, the changes made since Dale Earnhardt’s death have made a large impact on the sport. No one can really count the number of lives that were saved because of the changes made afterwards.
